DVD

Our DVD ‘Spiritual Care and Confusion’ is an edited version
of the conference of the same name held in Nuneaton in
October 2000 (see newsletter 2000-01 part 2) covering all
aspects of care of the individual and carer.
The subjects covered relate to :

  • Spiritual
  • Physical
  • Intellectual
  • Cultural
  • Emotional
  • Social

The DVD cover is a painting by Sr Annie Bronham IBVM à
A few lay people prayerfully reflecting on this painting
noted that the faces were not really smiling as first thought.
Reflecting deeper they became more aware of the feelings
people with dementia might have when entering a strange
environment... The sea of faces! Who are they? Old friends?
Strangers? Do I know them? What do they want?
Feelings of Fear. Terror. Exposed. Can I trust them?

The feelings experienced inspired the Reflection on Painting:

Reviews of this DVD

This DVD gives a very helpful insight into the vital ministry of spiritual care with those
in confusion of many kinds. It is an example of a whole ministry working in partnership
with diverse agencies to meet the need with gentleness.

Canon Edward Pogmore - Senior Chaplain to George Eliot Hospital
NHS Trust

The gentle sharing with those in need in the autumn of their lives releases boundless resources
of goodness and mercy and the healing peace of God. I warmly welcome this venture and
gladly lift it up to the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving.

Dennis Wrigley - Leader and Co-Founder of the Maranatha Community

All the talks are reflective, insightful and refreshingly interesting. An excellent starting point
for further exploration about the theory and practice of spiritual care.

Rev James Woodward - Director of the Leveson Centre

'Spiritual Care in Confusion' is an excellent teaching resource that can help to raise general
awareness and stimulate understanding and support for those with dementia and their carers.

Albert Jewell - Methodists Home for the Aged (retired)

Myself and four senior care workers undertook a training programme with Frances looking at
spiritual care in confusion. We all found it very helpful and I am arranging another course to
enable more staff to attend. We feel that this will enhance the care we offer and
improve the quality of life of our residents.

Maggie Bailey R.M.N. R.G.N. - Manager of Cow Lees Nursing Home,
Astley Lane, Bedworth, Warwickshire CV10 9SD

Workshops

The questions below are a sample of those used in the workshops to generate discussion
and a further understanding of the needs of those with dementia:

1. As a carer, in what ways are your own
spiritual needs being met or not met?

2. What aspects of dementia have you found
difficult to cope with?

3. In what ways do you think people you know
with dementia are having their spiritual
needs met?

4. In what practical ways do you feel God still
communicates with people with dementia?

5. As a group/individual what can we/I do
locally to improve the quality of life for those
with dementia and their carers?

The DVD costs £15.00 (inc p&p) from the Pastoral Care Project.
